![]() The bell is a 10” custom made F bass bell in yellow brass by Gronitz in Hamburg (now retired). The slide has a removable handle, but I like to play it with the handle because it’s more fun that way. I had Brad remove one of the valves and modify it to take a full length F slide that Shires has custom built for me, making this a single valve F bass trombone at full length with a C single valve, much more useful! It plays remarkably well and provides an amazing core and foundation in a brass section for a lot of romantic repertoire, which is how I envisioned using it. At the time it had two inline valves and used a short standard length slide in combination with the valves for F trombone. I wanted to have an orchestral F bass trombone made for Germanic repertoire and sourced a one-off custom Gronitz F bass trombone from Steve Ferguson that was in his inventory. This is a custom project I commissioned from Brad Close. $6800 without case.Ĭustom Gronitz F Bass Trombone with C valve This is likely the only bass trombone conversion we will do and caps the end of our conversion projects, a fitting end! A lucky player will have a lifelong companion with this special one of a kind bass trombone. The instrument was meticulously buffed and lacquered and looks new. We were able to keep the original vintage Bach 50 lead pipe intact and it is included with a threaded collar. All ferrules, valve wrap and braces were made for this instrument and assembled by Don's hands. The slide has 4 new tubes, inners and outers, and is fast and smooth. It has our bell voodoo treatment, custom slide crook and threaded lead pipe receiver. Sourcing Open Flow valves from Germany (with bronze bearings) and designing the wrap and parts for the instrument from scratch, this instrument is what we came up with. We found a superb donor Corporation Bach 50B from the 1970s and set out on the task. In the same idea of our well regarded tenor conversions, we embarked to create a modern playing bass trombone that captures the vintage Bach sound. ![]() Don and I set out last year to work on a custom conversion of a vintage Bach 50 bass trombone. The Brass Ark/Don Sawday Bach 50 Custom Bass Trombone Tuning is at 440 additional tuning bits included. A case is included, no mouthpiece included (a Brad Close piece is in the photo for reference). This instrument also features a period accurate raw brass inner slide tubes, which make a warm and nuanced sound (but does require a bit more maintenance than chrome inner tubes) as well as a tuning slide. Egger reproduces the decorations of the original on this instrument, lots of hand engraving and stamping. The bell is hand hammered, brazed and finished by scraping in the traditional way. On the MDC model, a special alloy "Nuremburg" brass is used. This model is based on the Sebastien Hainlein sackbut from 1632. The YBL-421G features a semi-open wrap that allows for an open sound and smooth air flow.Egger Tenor Sackbut, Model Hainlein (1632) MDCĮgger makes some of the finest historic brass instruments in the world, this sackbut is a work of art! The MDC model is the most authentic replica Egger offers and I will highlight some of the notable details that make this sackbut so special. ![]() Yamaha trombones have mouthpipes featuring special acoustic designs allowing for precise intonation and greater blowing control. The large, easy-to-hold, nickel-silver bracing guards against possible slide damage if the instrument is dropped and also lessens fatigue while playing. The unique slide lock design on all Yamaha trombones keeps the slide locked in place and keeps it from accidentally falling. Perfectly rounded tubing results in less turbulence and a smoother air flow, thus allowing for an excellent scale and reduced resistance.Ī high-energy laser fuses the brass together for a virtually seamless bell which allows continuous even vibrations. Long-lasting, nickel-silver tubular braces contribute to the stability of the slide and enhance smooth slide action. Specially designed, one-piece, inner slide stockings guarantee airtight slide construction, and offer smoother slide action and better alignment, even in the extended 6th and 7th positions. This type of construction ensures airtightness, smooth action, and exceptional durability and offers improved response. The one-piece, drawn, yellow brass outer slide maintains an accurate diameter throughout its length. The chrome-plated, nickel-silver, drawn inner slide is very durable and has a quick, sensitive response. ![]()
